Endlessly compared to -- who can make aggressively angry music when they want to -- this quartet consciously seeks what is meandering and beautiful. If there is a strategy behind their music as revealed by 2001's Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever and 2003's The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place, it's that beauty seeks tension to resolve itself and find itself even in seeming chaos. This music featuring layered guitars, piano, bass, and drums begins with melody and more often than not ends with it, no matter how far from the quiet and even halting lyricism the band wandered into at the beginning. Which raises two questions. First, is All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone different from the other pair of records on Temporary Residence? And, of course, since one must confront the seemingly eternal academically trained analysis and cynicism of the indie world, 'Is it necessary?' The answer to both questions is 'yes.' While the surface of 's sonic sense of labyrinthine adventure is similar, the manner in which they get to the center of each piece is not. On 'The Birth and Death of the Day,' which opens the set, violence and noise are threatened from the beginning with distorted chords, feedback, and big crescendos. Space enters before lyricism here, though harmonically everything resonates as one, and for a moment one thinks that this is a forgotten intro to some lost and found song of yore, but they quickly pass that mark and dig inside the chaos for its roots and branches. 'It's Natural to Be Afraid' begins with subtle dissonance and the guitars emerging out of quiet chaos with sounds and pianos playing slowly and contrapuntally. It takes over 13 minutes to wind up, down, and around again, but it's an exercise that is rewarding for a patient listener -- or if you simply want to close your eyes and go with it. 'So Long, Lonesome,' at under four minutes, closes the set. Its piano lines take a front seat as guitars provide counterpoint and a sonic backdrop, and the tension force field never rises above a four. It's almost a chamber piece. Ultimately, there is real growth here, subtle and unpretentious as it is. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone is another gorgeous exercise. How can listeners not need more music by a band that seeks beauty over everything else in its subtly expanding sonic universe? ~ Thom Jurek.

Schultz’s beats on Jeremih amalgamated the styles of numerous contemporaries, and there is not much advancement on the follow-up, while the opening “All About You” is pretty close to a direct swipe of the-Dream's “Shawty Is a 10.” Jeremih often sounds drowsy, detached, and slumped in his VIP club booth, instead of on the prowl. Nothing approaches the bounding swagger of the debut’s “Break Up to Make Up,” and “Wanna Get Up,” the most overt dancefloor track, lacks the appeal of “Runway” and is ultimately forgettable. Worst of all is “Holding On,” an earnest, vaguely inspirational ballad song not built for Jeremih’s voice, which is best suited for lecherous material. DuVall joined Alice in Chains as lead singer during the band's reunion concerts in 2006, and made his first public performance with the band at 's Decades Rock Live concert. According to Cantrell, it only took one audition for DuVall to get the job. For his first rehearsal with the band, DuVall sang 'Love, Hate, Love'. After they finished, Sean Kinney looked at his bandmates and said, 'I think the search is pretty much over'. According to Mike Inez, DuVall didn't try to emulate Staley, and that's what drew them to him. Cantrell also revealed that singer was interested in joining the band. Duff McKagan again joined the band for the reunion tour, playing rhythm guitar on selected songs. Cantrell explained the reunion saying, 'We want to celebrate what we did and the memory of our friend. We have played with some [singers] who can actually bring it and add their own thing to it without being a Layne clone. We're not interested in stepping on [Staley's] rich legacy. It's a tough thing to go through. Do you take the approach and never play again, because the guy was that important? That's the approach we've taken for a lot of years. Or, do you give it a shot, try something? We're willing to take a chance on it. It's completely a reunion because the three of us who're left are back together. But it's not about separating and forgetting — it's about remembering and moving on.' Before the tour, Kinney mentioned in an interview that he would be interested in writing new material, but not as Alice in Chains. Sean Kinney said about the band's reunion: 'I never called Jerry; he never called me, and said, ’Hey, let’s get the band back together,’ you know? We had been taking every step extremely cautious and slow, and just doing whatever feels right: If it’s genuine and we’re doing it for genuine reasons and we’re all okay with it then we take a little step. None of us is broke. Nobody needs to be a rock dork, and you know, stroke their ego. I mean, we don’t really operate like that. So as long as it felt good and from the right place and it’s about making music and carrying on'. About the pressure being put on DuVall for replacing Staley as lead vocalist, Cantrell said, 'To put all that weight on Will’s shoulders is unfair. We’re just figuring out how we work as a team. Although the band has changed, we’ve lost Layne, we’ve added Will, and there was no master plan. Playing again in 2005 felt right, so we did the next thing and toured. We did it step by step. Susan Silver, who started managing Alice in Chains in 1988, now co-manages the band with and his firm. On June 11, 2009, Blabbermouth.net reported that the new album would be titled and was officially set to be released on September 29, 2009. The title first appeared on without any prior announcement from the band. In addition, it was announced that plays piano on the, a tribute to Layne Staley written and sung by Cantrell. The album features new vocalist and rhythm guitarist sharing vocal duties with lead guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, who sings lead vocals in most of the songs. DuVall sings lead vocals on the song 'Last of My Kind'. On June 30, 2009, the song ' was made available for purchase via and, and for a limited time it was available as a free download through the official Alice in Chains website in early July. Although it wasn't the album's first radio single, Rock stations across the U.S. Started playing the song. The music video for 'A Looking in View' debuted via the band's official website on July 7, 2009. The song was nominated for a for. ' was released to radio stations as the first official single from the album on August 14, 2009, and was made available for purchase on August 17, 2009. The music video for 'Check My Brain' premiered on September 14, 2009. The song was also nominated for a for. Sean Kinney said about the new album and the fans' mixed reactions about the band moving on after Staley's death: 'Look, it’s a big move to fucking stand up and move on. Some people, the music connected with them so strongly, their opinions, how they feel about it. It’s amazing that they have such a connection but they seem to act like it happened to them. This happened to us and Layne’s family, not them. This is actually our lives. If we’re okay with it, why can’t you be? This happened to us, this didn’t happen to you. But this album isn’t about that, it’s a bigger universal point. We’re all going to fucking die, we’re all going to lose somebody, and it fucking hurts. How do you move on? This record is us moving on, and hurting. That, to me, is a victory. I already feel like I’ve won.' 'Sometimes people ask us, ‘Wouldn’t Layne have been pissed off that we did this?’ And I tell them it would have been the opposite: he would have been pissed off that it took us so long to do this. We’re not doing this for money; there is no money in the music business anymore. Jerry and I funded the whole album, and we spent lots of our own money, because we believe in this. And one of the reasons I’m doing this is so more light is turned on to something where the light was turned off.' And Cantrell added: 'We’ve toured around the world, we’ve lost some friends, we buried a dear friend, and somebody that you just can’t fucking replace, and then we’ve chosen by circumstance to get together again. That turned into ‘maybe we can fucking do this.’ And that turned into this'. In September 2008, it was announced that Alice in Chains would headline Australia's in 2009, alongside and. In February 2009, it was also announced that Alice in Chains would play at the third annual festival. On August 1, 2009, Alice in Chains performed, along with,, and, at Marlay Park, Dublin as direct support to Metallica. The band made an appearance on on November 10, 2009, performing 'Lesson Learned', ', and 'Check My Brain' as the final performance of the episode. To coincide with the band's European tour, Alice in Chains released its next single, ', on November 16, 2009 in the UK and on December 1 in the US. The last single from the album was ' and was released to rock radio in mid-June 2010. Black Gives Way to Blue debuted at No. On May 18, 2010, the album was certified gold by the for selling over 500,000 copies in the U.S. The singles ' Check My Brain' and ' Your Decision' reached No. 1 on 's, while ' Lesson Learned' reached No. 'Check My Brain' was also the band's first #1 song on the chart, and on the chart, it also reached No. 92 on Billboard's, becoming the band's first single to appear on the chart. Along with and, Alice in Chains toured the United States and Canada in late 2010 on the tour, an amalgam of the three bands' latest album titles ( Black Gives Way to Blue,, and ). On March 8, 2011, former Alice in Chains bassist was found dead at his home in Salt Lake City. Police told Reuters they were called to Starr's home at 1:42 pm and found his body; Starr was 44. Reports later surfaced that Starr's roommate had seen him mixing and anxiety medication hours before he was found dead. Later reports indicated Starr's death may have been linked to two different types of antidepressants prescribed to him by his doctor. A public memorial was held for Starr at the Seattle Center's International Fountain on March 20, 2011. A private memorial was also held, which Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney attended according to Mike Inez. The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here and next album (2011–present) [ ] On March 21, 2011, Alice in Chains announced that they were working on a fifth studio album, and both Cantrell and Inez later made statements that they had begun the recording process. The album was expected to be finished by summer of 2012 and released by the end of 2012 or beginning of 2013. While Alice in Chains were writing for the album in 2011, Cantrell required surgery, which delayed recording the new material. In an interview published in May 2012, Cantrell explained, 'The thing that set me back is I had some bone spurs [and] cartilage issues in my shoulders. In December 2012, Cantrell confirmed that the new album had been completed, and the first single, ', debuted online on December 18, available for digital download in January 2013, along with an official music video. On February 13, 2013, Alice in Chains posted on that their new album title would be an anagram of the letters H V L E N T P S U S D A H I E E O E D T I U R R. The next day they announced that the album would be called, which was released on May 28, 2013, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200. The band released videos for the songs 'Stone,' 'Voices,' and the title track later in 2013. 'Hollow' and 'Stone' reached No. 1 on 's, while 'Voices' reached No. 3, and each one of the three songs stayed on the chart for 20 weeks. Alice in Chains toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Europe in 2013 and 2014. In May 2013, the band co-headlined the annual festival with in. Asked in September 2013 if Alice in Chains would make another album, Cantrell replied, 'It'll be a while. It's [been] four years since we put the last one out, but at least it's not the gap that was between the last one, so that's about right - about three to four years.' In January 2017, Mike Inez stated in an interview that the band had begun work on a new album. In June 2017, it was reported that the band would return to Studio X in Seattle to record a new album later that month, for a tentative early 2018 release. The sessions will be helmed by, who produced the band's last two albums. Studio X was the studio where Alice in Chains recorded its 1995 self-titled album. According to Inez, the band is not currently signed to a label, having completed its previous two-record contract with the Universal Music Group. 'This [upcoming album], we're not sure where it's gonna land. I mean, we financed ['Black Gives Way To Blue'] on our own too, so we're not too worried about that stuff. Although Alice in Chains has been labeled by the mainstream media, Jerry Cantrell identifies the band as primarily. He told in 1996, 'We're a lot of different things. The has stated, 'Living and playing in Seattle might have got them the grunge tag, but they've always pretty much been a band to the core.' Regarding the band's constant categorization by the media, Cantrell stated 'When we first came out we were metal. Then we started being called alternative metal. Then grunge came out and then we were hard rock. And now, since we've started doing this again I've seen us listed as: hard rock, alternative, alternative metal and just straight metal. I walked into an HMV the other day to check out the placement and see what's on and they've got us relegated back into the metal section. Right back where we started!' Drummer Sean Kinney rejects the grunge label, stating in a 2013 interview 'I mean, before we first came out there was no grunge, they hadn’t invented that word. Before they invented the word grunge we were alternative rock and alternative metal and metal and rock, and we didn’t give a shit whatever, we were a rock and roll band!' According to, they were always the metal stepchildren of the Seattle scene. Jerry Cantrell's guitar style combines 'pummeling riffs and expansive guitar textures' to create 'slow, brooding minor-key grinds'. He is also recognized for his natural ability to blend acoustic and electric guitars. While down-tuned, distorted guitars mixed with Staley's distinctive 'snarl-to-a-scream' vocals appealed to fans, the band also had 'a sense of melody that was undeniable', which introduced Alice in Chains to a much wider audience outside of the heavy metal underground. According to of, Alice in Chains' sound has a '-style riffing and an unconventional vocal style'. The band has been described by Erlewine as 'hard enough for metal fans, yet their dark subject matter and punky attack placed them among the front ranks of the Seattle-based grunge bands'. Three of the band's releases feature acoustic music, and while the band initially kept these releases separate, Alice in Chains' self-titled album combined the styles to form 'a bleak, nihilistic sound that balanced grinding hard rock with subtly textured acoustic numbers'. Alice in Chains is also noted for the unique vocal harmonies of Staley (or DuVall) and Cantrell, which included overlapping passages, dual lead vocals, and trademark harmonies typically separated by a major third. Cantrell said it was Staley who gave him the self-assurance to sing his own songs. This unapologetic expression of vitriol is directed towards the masses of humanity who, for whatever personal reason, are bound and determined to believe in damn near everything that pours into the pitifully underused lump of smooth gray sponge cake between their ears, with the sole exception of facts. It's the sheer preponderance of this type of individual that leads to such reactions as were received by the TV-movie Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, which was broadcast on UPN. A -esque film (that actually came out a year before that film) which depicts a rural family being attacked by aliens in their own home, Alien Abduction's first broadcast was followed by an invitation for the viewer to visit the UPN website and voice their opinions about the veracity of the video. The great majority swallowed it whole, and UPN subsequently broadcast it with 'additional, recently recovered footage' in order to milk the cash cow that much drier. I missed its actual airing, but was sent a copy by a friend who thought I might find it funny. She was correct. A brief summary: The McPherson family has supposedly gone missing, the only clue to their disappearance being the videotape of their Thanksgiving dinner found in the house. The tape shows the family preparing for dinner when a power transformer shorts out on a nearby pole, which leads to the discovery of an apparent UFO in the backyard. Two stereotypical Communion/ Close Encounters-style aliens are seen using lasers to cut up a cow (which is not seen,) and various wacky things ensue. The car's engine gets fried, the family shoots at aliens that get inside the house, spooky nosebleeds occur and red marks appear on people's necks; a ball of white light that totally fails to illuminate anything flies around the room, people start disappearing, yadda yadda. Amongst the snatches of videotape we have various 'experts' commenting on the proceedings, including a child psychologist who explains away the youngest child's poor acting chops by saying she appears 'possessed,' owing to his presumably many years of experience in dealing with possessed children. I was laughing through pretty much the whole damn thing, and had decided partway through to make my own film to debunk theirs. This turned out to be unnecessary, but I'll take this one step at a time. The fakery was obvious from the very get-go. Having made plenty of fake sci-fi film crap myself, I found it remarkably easy to spot what was really happening. The supposedly unbroken pan across the lawn to the model UFO contains a jump-cut which is very visible in frame-by-frame viewing, used to hide the fact that they' ve suddenly panned onto a small-scale miniature. There's no fog outside in these early exteriors, but suddenly it becomes densely foggy as the two aliens are spied cutting up a completely invisible cow with their lasers. Lasers don't have a visible beam when there's no fog for the beam to illuminate. Damn convenient for the atmospheric conditions to accomodate more dramatic-looking images. The video has constant intrusions of static which is obviously superimposed later, as it never distorts the actual images on the tape. Also extremely convenient is the fact that the static tends to come in strongest right before any special effects scene. Because take one of the smoke bomb under the car hood probably failed, for example, and they had to hide the edit where they cut to take two. This pattern repeats constantly throughout the film. The video has the occasional sound bridge, i.e. The sound continues unbroken even when the camera changes angles, which means it went through post-production, and was not found footage. These sudden angle changes don't seem to affect the clock in the corner of the picture either; twice it still clocks a full minute across a cut where the camera was apparently turned off and repositioned, meaning the clock was added after the fact (it's a built-in filter of the Adobe Premiere editing program.) The light ball is by far the worst giveaway; aside from the fact that it casts no light and makes no shadows, it's painfully obvious that it's simply the Adobe Premiere lens flare filter, another built-in effect of the program clearly used to edit the video. Also, this supposedly single tape somehow was recording for six hours, and even if your camcorder could record in SLP mode, I doubt the existence of a camera battery that would last six hours almost as much as I doubt alien visitors. Clearly, the legions of Americans who joyfully swallow everything stupid they're told is true didn't apply any critical examination to this patently obvious hoax whatsoever, but even more disappointing is the fact that they apparently couldn't read, either. My 'debunking film' project was rendered completely unnecessary (though as you can see from the link atop this page, I ultimately did it anyway) when the end came, complete with credits for the whole 'family' as well as the aliens. The testimonials were also provided by actors, (including the sheriff who supposedly found the tape) with the exceptions of Stanton Friedman, a well-known UFO believer, and Michael Shermer, president of the and big-time debunker. Listening to their comments, it became pretty clear that neither of the two had seen the actual tape they were supposedly commenting upon. Suddenly, the whole thing was a grotesque disappointment. What had seemed an at least fairly impressive hoax for an actual family to pull off abruptly became a totally lame hoax pulled by a major corporation for the obvious purpose of making a buck off of credulous viewers. Words like 'fraud' and.well, mostly just 'fraud' came to mind rather quickly, especially since UPN had billed the whole kitty kabob as the real magoo in all their promos. Writer-director Dean Alioto later went on record saying that he had only ever intended it as a piece of entertainment (his original cut can be seen ), and had inserted disclaimers at each commercial break. UPN had removed those, cut the film down to an hour and added the testimonials afterwards. Swell buncha guys. Not only that, but almost all of the egregiously fake-looking crap-the bogus static, the inaccurate clock, the lens flare-were added by the geniuses at UPN, who also chopped out the most impressive and believeable special effect in the whole production. If there's anything more inane than the initial audience reaction, though, it was the subsequent uproar from the community of fundamentalist UFO cultists who accused the film of being nothing short of a government tactic designed to discredit believers in actual alien abductions. This is very possibly the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard in a world filled to the bursting point with stupid fucking things. The bungholes who rant about the ubiquitous 'cover-up' and then claim that this film was 'an insult to their intelligence' fail to notice just how much they insult their own 'intelligence' every time they attempt to make use of words. If the people in charge of our country can't even keep their marital indiscretions off the front page, they're hardly competent enough to keep decades' worth of alleged alien contact under wraps. These tend to be the same sorts of folks who ask the non-UFO believer the utterly irrelevant question 'Don't you think there's life out there in the universe besides us?' As if disbelieving in rats with interstellar spacecraft equates to a disbelief in rats, period. If you're one of those folks, I hope this pisses you off. It doesn't hurt, and it can be terribly useful. The clearest indication of the mindlessness of the UFO dogmatist is that there is apparently nothing that they will accept as contrary evidence to their beliefs, a trait they share in common with fundamental religionists. Since falsifiability is a necessary prerequisite for any scientific theory, they cannot even hope to claim a scientific standpoint for their beliefs. If someday an alien spacecraft lands on my lawn and bug-eyed critters trundle out and say 'ruhueri vrjvieur jvieurer jerjiorei!' Then I'll accept that aliens are probably indeed visiting us. But if there's no evidence that you will accept as being a refutation of such alleged visits, you display a contemptible disregard for facts and rational thought that I have no intention of taking seriously. For my part, I would hope that if human astronauts ever land on a planet with intelligent life, they'll find something more productive to do than scare people in their sleep, endlessly probe their poop chutes and draw incomprehensible graffiti in their wheat. That's our tax dollars paying for that shit. Next time you see a piece of video claiming to be proof of something extraordinary, give it more than a half-second's worth of thought before accepting it outright. It's implied that the Predalien mutated/grew to full size in a very short timeframe before attacking and killing the crew of the scout ship. •: The Predalien is completely indiscriminate in its victims, invading a maternity ward in the town's hospital and implanting pregnant women with its own xenomorph embryos. •: • Facehuggers seem to be able to knock someone out within six or seven seconds in this film. People have speculated that they use their tails to knock someone out, but that would require a precise chokehold (a blood choke specifically). The speed of the knock out suggests they sedate their host through some unknown means; the best examples being the two homeless men. • Recent sources such as the Weyland-Yutani Report confirm that the parasites use a cynose-based sedation as the method of subduing its victim. •: Dale's idea is to leave town without guns. He calls out the plan to break into a gun store as stupid, but is ordered by Dallas to shut up. In all honesty, they could have just left town. The chances of the xenomorphs following them were slim, and even on the gridlocked roads, they could get pretty far before that Tactical Nuke came down. •: This is how the soldiers react when called out on destroying the town with a nuclear bomb. •: With the exception of the four main characters, the entire town of Gunnison, Colorado (including several supporting characters, the Predalien and Wolf) are wiped out with a nuclear bomb. The ending also leaves the fate of the four survivors ambiguous. •: The Predalien towers over the human-spawned Xenomorphs given that its host was the already large Predator. Reveals that that the Predalien is a young Queen (given her depositing alien embryos in any pregnant human she can get her hands on) who would ultimately have grown even larger than a human-spawned one. •: Requiem is known in some countries as Aliens VS Predator 2. •: The Predalien develops into a young Queen capable of orally implanting Chestbursters. •: The shot of 'Gunnison' clearly is not the same town in real-life. Even the hospital's emergency generator mostly just makes the fluorescent lights flicker. •: The xenomorphs are loose on a planet with billions of people that can potentially spawn just as many xenomorphs.and only Wolf responds to deal with the problem. • It's possible the Predators were thinking it was unlikely they'd spread since humanity doesn't even have manned interplanetary travel yet. • Somewhat justified in the Unrated edition as the scenes are changed so that no information is given with the initial distress signal and it's not until Wolf arrives on Earth and watches a recording on one of the dead Predator's mask that he realises what's going on. The film may also suggest that wolf was unaware that Chet could impregnate victims until late in the film so he may have assumed he was dealing with a finite number of Aliens. •: The National Guard unit sent to Gunnison only gets about a minute of screentime before they're all killed in an alien ambush. •: With the release of (which has an that more closely ties into the, namely that there was no Charles Bishop Weyland in the 2004 AVP), the AVP series is relegated to. •: In its cameo at the end of Alien vs. Predator, the Predalien chestburster was shown with an inner jaw. The Vasquez-like character in Requiem (a female war veteran who's just returned home) survives the film along with her daughter, and has several moments where she mows down xenomorphs by herself. •: A shows Kelly and her daughter trying to find refuge at a cemetery, where they find a crazed homeless man wielding a revolver. When the daughter begins to whimper and cry, the man tells Kelly to shut her up, under threat of killing them. Seeing this from a distance, Wolf unintentionally saves them by shooting the homeless man in the head and allowing both women to flee. • The scene shows Kelly reaching for the homeless man's weapon and Wolf roves his laser sight over the weapon as a warning. •: Wolf, especially after taking up the fallen Predators' weapons. •: Wolf's bladed whip can slice up an enemy by wrapping around it and pulling in. It's also made from a Xenomorph's tail. |
